17/8/09 – So, 10 days left and we’re headed home!!! Off to see Daly Waters then turning onto the Carpentaria/Savannah Hwy. We’re planning to stop somewhere quite and hopefully free tonight, then onto Lawn Hill for a couple of days.
We did a pit stop at Daly Waters. Life back home would not have been worth living (Peter and Kay) if we had not stopped there. It was an interesting place but we were rushing to make camp before dark. Found a spot as dark rapidly approached. I didn’t even have time to check for ants before the tarp was down and the tent up – 10 mins and beer in hand!!!

18/8/09 – We weren’t expecting the Carpentaria/Savannah Hwy to be so interesting. It was every bit as enjoyable as the Gibb River Road with water crossings, sand and corrugations. It was still dusty of course. We stopped for the night at the Robinson River rest area which reminded us of the stop at the Pentacost River – very quiet and we were on our own, fantastic.

19/8/09 – Up and off early not sure what the road would bring. WE GOT AIRBORNE!!! Seriously, we hit a dip going round a bend, got airborne, flew across the other side of the road but thankfully stayed upright. I was working on the computer at the time and that nearly hit the roof. We were really lucky not to flip the car – if I had been driving I wouldn’t have known not to put my foot on the brakes. Steve reckons if he had then the wheels would have dug in and we would have been rolling! Some poor bugger previous to us didn’t do so well. He hit the dip and landed so hard his bull bar hit his tyres, shredded them and fell off. He was seriously ‘unhappy’. We were lucky we missed him too.
We carried on and drove through the Queensland Border, past Heart Break Hotel and Hells Gate Roadhouse. We saw a wild boar – a big one, and then a baby one. That was really special. We crossed our deepest river yet as we were driving in the Lawn Hill Nat Park – about 900 ml and flowing quite fast. As usual we had the windows down going oooo and ahhhh. It was a long day and we made Lawn Hill just as dark was approaching (again) and put the tent up.

20/8/09 – Had a nice quiet night and a good sleep. Went for a good walk to some waterfalls – did a Gorge walk, had a swim and ‘bimbled’ along the rivers edge. Staying another night then off to Riversleigh – we are going to look at the Montypythonoids. Steve promises me he’s not joking but I think he’s thinking of a Monty Python sketch. I’ll fnd out tomorrow. Oh - I have to mention that Steve had his last glass of home brew last night and is now wearing a big baggy lip. Only 7 days left now.

Some STUPID BLOODY HAPPY CAMPER too near to us, thinks the whole camp site wants to listen to his BLOODY Country and Western music. Not happy Jan!!!
21/8/09 – Visited the Riversleigh World Heritage Site, fantastic fossils. It was interesting and we were glad we went. Then drove to Gregory Downs with the intention of staying the night but we just drove on through! Camped up by the Leichhardt River where we say an Emu and her chicks – fantastic. Nice spot.

22/8/09 – Long drive to Burke and Wills Roadhouse and then on to Julia Creek. The town was closed all but the fuel station but the steak sannies were very tasty. Now heading down to Kynuna (towards Winton). The last dusty road we think – YEAH!!! Planning to drive to Carnarvon Gorge for a couple of nights before we get home.
