Alice to Broome & back. Heat & flies!!

From Alice Springs we decided to head up to Broome in Western Australia via the Tanami Track. The road is 1050 Km to Halls Creek, mostly dirt road, with just a couple of Aboriginal communities on the way.  A welcome spot near Halls Creek is Palm Springs, a great camp site amid the dust of the deserts.

Broome had been hit with three cyclones earlier in the year and combined with the unseasonably hot weather the heat, humidity & mosquitoes were unreal. We decided the only way to survive was to head back to Alice to cool temperatures!

Heading back to Queensland via the Plenty & Donahue Highways tomorrow - more dirt roads :)

    1. Thanks Jay, it's a spectacular part of the world, quite remote & unspoilt. One of our favourite places we keep going back to.

  2. Hi. Hope that you make it home ok with the car and that the repair bill won't be too much. When next you venture that way try taking off you shirt Steve and walk around for a while. See how many flies you can collect. When I was up there in 69 it was like wearing a coat. You could literally feel the weight of the mass of flies on your back. You are experiencing something that not many people have and you will be able to tell stories about our outback. Safe travels

  3. Great pics as usual Fangio. Was that a Frigate bird with the ? Looks like the ones we used to get in the Caribbean.
Did you get near the Bungle Bungles? Wanted to go there after flying over them once when visiting Sydney.
I'm just back from a 7,000 km tour of China, no time to do a blog and no flies and bugger all wildlife. China has changed a lot since your report from years ago when you were out there for a skydiving competition. It's clean, the hostels are clean and there's an immense amount of construction, roads, rail etc.
    Hot and humid though...
